How accurate is the US Navy body fat formula?
Research shows the US Navy method is accurate to within 3-4 percentage points for most people. It is less accurate for very muscular or very lean individuals.
Where do I measure my waist for this calculation?
For males, measure at the navel. For females, measure at the narrowest point of the abdomen. Keep the tape level and do not suck in.
Where do I measure my neck?
Measure just below the larynx (Adam's apple) with the tape perpendicular to the long axis of the neck.
What body fat percentage is healthy?
For men, 14-17% is in the fitness category and is generally healthy. For women, 21-24% is the fitness range. Essential fat alone (very low levels) is not sustainable.
Why is the hips measurement required for women?
The female Widmark formula includes hip circumference because fat distribution differs between sexes. The hip measurement improves accuracy for female calculations.
